Uniting American Families Act

Yesterday, Democratic Representatives urged Congress to pass the Uniting American Families Act as part of Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). The bill seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to allow for permanent partners of U.S. citizens and permanent residents to obtain lawful permanent resident status. House Democrats are hoping to garner the support of the gay, lesbian, and transgendered community for CIR, which has stalled in the House. However, in doing so, they will likely further polarize themselves from, and lose the support of, conservatives and Republicans (who will not support same-sex marriage) further stalling CIR.
